This PD session aims to give participants a broad basic understanding of the concept of "meaning-based" translating and interpreting by: - briefly reviewing the development of various views and approaches over the last half-century, and - exploring the concept of "equivalence in meaning" in more depth. Many practitioners may at times have had the experience of being asked to justify their linguistic decisions, and it helps if we understand what constitutes "good quality" in translating and interpreting, what approaches may be appropriate, and most importantly the reasons why some approaches are more appropriate than others.
