Description

This webinar assists interpreters in developing high-order decision-making skills for resolving complex ethical dilemmas in medical settings. It is aimed at experienced interpreters who already have sound knowledge of the AUSIT Code of Ethics. In medical settings, interpreters often find themselves in challenging situations involving complex human interaction. In order to handle these challenges professionally, interpreters require not only sound knowledge of the Code of Ethics but also fast situational judgement and high-order decision-making skills. In this webinar, we will look at true ethical dilemmas involving “at least two possible, but competing, ethically appropriate courses of action” (Kidder, 1995, in Hoza). We will invite interpreters to reflect on professional practice challenges in medical settings, and offer an opportunity to enhance their problem-solving skills. The following topics are included: - Deontological (rules-based) and teleological (goal-based) approach to ethics - Professional decision-making models including Demand-Control Schema - Considering the context and consequences of actions while making a decision - Applying decision-making skills to complex medical interpreting scenarios - Best practice strategies for making ethical decisions. Our Presenter - Anna Kenny is a Polish Interpreter and a Professional Development Coordinator with the NSW Health Care Interpreter Services. Anna was born and educated in Poland. She graduated from Warsaw University with a Masters Degree in English Philology. Anna also holds a Masters Degree in Interpreting and Translation Pedagogy from Macquarie University, Sydney. Anna has worked for HCIS for over 30 years where she coordinates and facilitates training for healthcare interpreters across NSW. She has also taught interpreting at Macquarie University, developed medical interpreting resources for RMIT and facilitated seminars on medical interpreting, ethics and interpreting skills for AUSIT and private interpreting agencies.
