Description

As generative AI and machine translation became part of everyday professional practice, post-editing increasingly involved evaluating and refining translation choices rather than simply correcting errors. This workshop introduced a meaning-focused framework for analysing AI-generated translations and making informed post-editing decisions. Through practical examples and guided activities, participants learned to assess what was being represented (accuracy and completeness of meaning), how meaning positioned readers and listeners (voice, stance, and evaluation), and how meaning was organised as a text (flow, cohesion, and readability). The workshop also explored common machine-translation patterns, strategic revision priorities, and ways to justify post-editing decisions for quality assurance, ethical practice, and client communication. Drawing on insights from Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), the workshop presented practical tools for strengthening skills that translators and interpreters already used intuitively. No prior knowledge of SFL was required. The workshop was presented by Professor Mira Kim, Professor of Translation and Interpreting at UNSW Sydney and a leading researcher in translation quality and Systemic Functional Linguistics, and Alisa Tian, Associate Lecturer in Translation and Interpreting at UNSW Sydney, an experienced practitioner who currently quality-checks AI-generated translations for SBS television programs.
