Resilience...is it 'just a word'?

Saturday 28 November 2020
Zoom Online Webinar
10.00am - 11.00am AEDT (Syd, Canb, Melb, Hob)

REGISTRATIONS CLOSED

With a theme such as “Business as Un-Usual” the 2020 Conference and dialogue around it is open to the power of the word. In this time of COVID-19, in a world of political, environmental and social uncertainty, in times of strength and challenge, the opportunity to re-work and re-word the notion of resilience in the Interpreting and translation space is vital.

Join me, raw and real, as a practitioner, trainer and storyteller in debunking resilience in these ‘Un-Usual’ times. If it is not resilience then what is it? We will take a peek into what is ‘lost in translation’ and the impact on interpreters and translators when they do what they do in a context of COVID, crisis, war, and Un-usual times.

Presenter
  -Judy Saba

Interpreting is an essential part of effective communication.
As a 12-year-old I interpreted for my parents at a meeting with the school principal.  What should have been a disciplinary meeting with suspension from school as my sentence, resulted in my parents believing that I was a model student and that I was granted 2 weeks leave for such “good work”.  I learnt very quickly that language was power and as the holder of both languages, I held that power”

Judy Saba is an accredited diversity trainer, cross-cultural psychologist and public speaker with extensive experience in counseling, critical problem analysis and applied diversity training in both public and private sector contexts including Health, Education, Torture Trauma and Refugee services and Policing.

Judy's interest in the skills of Interpreting and Translation has been an ongoing passion borne from her own experiences in using interpreters, watching the use of interpreters and ultimately over the last 30 years training other professionals in the critical skill of "Working with Interpreters."

To date Judy has designed, delivered and evaluated diversity training in numerous disciplines. She has designed and delivered training in 'Working with Interpreters' within Education, Health, Social Services, the Judiciary, the corporate sector, Psychology and Health sector and Policing. Further she continues to also support and provide training to Interpreters on Interpreting in traumatic contexts and managing vicarious trauma.

Most recently, having researched diversity training in policing jurisdictions in the US, Middle East and UK as part of her Churchill Fellowship, Judy has pioneered a brand of applied diversity training tailored to and drawn from the realities of policing in a diverse environment. This had also included the refinement of training in working with interpreters for all aspects of policing as well as engaging policing organizations in their approaches to training. Judy is committed to the delivery of capable cross-cultural training and psychology services and works from the philosophy of shared responsibility, human rights and capability enhancement.

A commitment to sharing experience and skills has seen Judy present at both local, national and international conferences including most recently, the International Conference of Psychology and Law in Belgium in May 2017, Safer Relationships Conference in Prato Italy in October 2017, Federation of Interpreters and Translators Conference in Brisbane in 2017 as well as the International Policing and Securities Conference in Sydney in October 2018. In December 2018 Judy also had the privilege of speaking at the RMIT Symposium on Interpreting in the Domestic and Family Violence context and in March 2019 at the Melbourne Chinese Interpreters symposium: Telephone Interpreting, challenges and impact of Vicarious trauma over the phone

In her spare time, Judy is an obsessive foodie and moonlights as a food reviewer as well as being the guide on walking food safari tours for Maeve O'Meara's "Gourmet Safaris".
