NAT: Interactional Management in Community Interpreting
Live Event - Via Zoom online

Saturday 10 April 2021

2.00pm - 4.00pm AEST Syd, Melb, Can, Hob

REGISTRATIONS CLOSED

Interpreting in community settings is seldom limited to conveying a straightforward exchange of information. Interpreters typically play a double role. In addition to relaying people’s talk (message transfer), they are often required to co-ordinate people’s talk (interaction management) (Cecilia Wadensjö, 1998 & 2002).

NAATI Certified Interpreters and Specialist Certified Interpreters (Health and Legal) are expected to be able to “skilfully coordinate the communication where required”. But how much education have interpreters practising in Australia had about when and how to best manage the flow of the communication?

In this webinar, we will:

  • define interactional management in interpreted encounters
  • explore managing interaction in one-on-one meetings/consultations, group settings including tribunals and family conferences, and in remote interpreting
  • discuss strategies for making appropriate interventions to facilitate the flow of the communication.

This live webinar also offers an opportunity to share your interactional management experience with peers, ask questions and develop best practice strategies.
