NAT: Legal Interpreting Series
Seminar 3 "Interpreters in Court"
Online Webinar via Zoom Friday 1 October 2021 2.00pm - 5.00pm AEST (QLD, NSW, VIC)
This session looks at the roles and responsibilities of the parties involved in interpreted proceedings by reviewing the standards set by the Judicial Council on Cultural Diversity in its Recommended Standards for Working with Interpreters in Courts and Tribunals, then hones in on interpreter preparation and resources. We will look both at the type of preparation that is useful for court interpreting in general, as well as how to prepare for specific cases. Presenter
Silvia Martinez is a NAATI-Certified Interpreter and Translator (Spanish<>English), who has concentrated her interpreting practice on conference and legal interpreting. She gained an appreciation of the challenges and requirements for interpreting in legal settings—and the skills—when she completed a Graduate Diploma in Interpreting and Translation at Western Sydney University in 2001. She also worked as research assistant to Professor Sandra Hale on the project that led to Interpreter Policies, Practices and Protocols in Australian Courts and Tribunals, published in 2011 by the Australasian Institute of Judicial Administration, and which laid important groundwork for the development of the JCCD’s Recommended National Standards for Working with Interpreters in Courts and Tribunals. Silvia works on a freelance and casual employment basis, both with private clients and through agencies contracted to provide interpreting services in courts and tribunals. She frequently works in the NSW criminal jurisdiction as court-appointed interpreter through Multicultural NSW and, through the same agency, at NSW Police interviews. And she is, of course, a member of AUSIT and of Translators and Interpreters Australia (Professionals Australia).
