"Linguistic Ecology" - PD Event
Please NOTE that there will be a PD event just after the AGM. It will be screened into the NAATI Boardroom from 12.30pm and we would love to see you there.
Title: Linguistic Ecology
Speaker: Associate Professor Uldis Ozolins
Register - KEEP A LOOK OUT for separate eFlash for this event.
This PD session takes a step back from the daily practitioner issues in Interpreting & Translation to look at the evolving language ecology of Australia. It briefly surveys the history of language policy in this country, and uses Census data to show important shifts in the salience of Languages Other than English, and an abiding presence of significant numbers who speak English poorly. It finishes with some ongoing thoughts on both language maintenance and language loss.
Dr Uldis Ozolins is a teacher, reseracher, and practitioner of Interpreting & Translation, and is one of the best published authors in this field in Australia. He has taught at several Australian universities, currently at Western Sydney and RMIT. He is author of The Politics of Language in Australia (CUP 1993) and co-author of Liaison Interpreting (MUP 1996) and of Community Translation (Bloomsbury 2016). He led the team rewriting the AUSIT Code of Ethics in 2012
Please NOTE also that the ACT is still responding to the threat posed by COVID-19. We encourage you to attend virtually if you are unwell and to consider wearing a mask if you attend in-person.
We look forward to welcoming you there.
