Consecutive Interpreting and Note Taking Course

Friday 17 April & Saturday 18 April 2020


This course has been designed for interpreters working with new and emerging languages or languages which NAATI does not currently test who wish to gain NAATI certification as recognised practising interpreters, and for practising interpreters preparing for the professional certified interpreter test.


SESSION 1: CONSECUTIVE INTERPRETING

  • Introduction to course and some theory
  • Consecutive interpreting demonstrations
  • Developing memory skills
  • Use of minimal notes in short segments
  • Introduction to note taking for longer segments
  • Suggestions for practice


SESSION 2: DEVELOPMENT OF NOTE TAKING SKILLS

  • Practice in structuring notes and using symbols wisely
  • Adding, developing and rejecting symbols
  • Practice on material of increasing length and complexity
  • Reviewing and simplifying notes
  • Balancing memory and note-taking
  • Sight translation: demonstration and practice
  • Suggestions for further practice
  • Evaluation and feedback

Participants are asked to bring a spiral A4 notepad and any other devices they may wish to use in their practice.

Presenter:

Felicity Mueller has worked as a German/English interpreter in conference and community settings for over 30 years. She has taught consecutive and simultaneous interpreting as well as translation at UWS, UNSW and the Centre for Translation Studies at the University of Vienna. In 2017 she developed a course in chuchotage for accredited professional interpreters transitioning to the certified professional interpreter level for AUSIT and NAATI. Note taking has always been an area of particular interest to Felicity.
