T & I Codes of Ethics across the World

Purpose

An interactive event, comparing systems and principles of ethics across the world, which aims to provide an opportunity to self-reflect on one’s own values and practices.

Overview

This event will delve into translation and interpreting (T&I) codes of ethics from a cross-cultural perspective and highlight the importance of self-reflective examinations by translators and interpreters of their own practices.

Maho Fukuno, a Japanese translator and a PhD student at the ANU, will:

briefly introduce some of the main philosophical approaches to ethics;

compare the systems of translation and interpreting codes of ethics in various countries by relating them to each country’s translation and interpreting and language policies; and lastly

compare the AUSIT code of ethics and a code of ethics in Japan specifically for “consultation interpreting”.

This event will be interactive and, after the presentation from Maho, participants will be asked to discuss various cases reflecting on the presented examples and their own values and practices. To prepare for these discussions, participants are encouraged to, before the event, look into T&I code(s) of ethics available in a region where their working language is used.

This is a Zoom event, and so participants will be asked to download a Zoom V.5 account to a device: https://zoom.us/meetings

As the event is designed to be interactive, it would be best if each participant has a working microphone and speakers (the ones built into the device should be fine). Ideally, each participant would have a webcam as well.

Please note that registration will close three (3) days before the event on 17 June 2020. The presentation and discussion will not be recorded and registrants must attend at the time and date specified. Instructions to join the event will be e-mailed to registered participants two (2) days before the event on 18 June 2020.

Presenter

Maho Fukuno is an English-Japanese translator certified by NAATI. She is also a PhD candidate in Linguistics and Translation Studies at the Australian National University. After receiving her BA from Osaka University in Japan, she completed a Master of Translating and Interpreting at RMIT University in 2016. Her PhD project explores, from a social-cultural perspective, the relationship between translators’ ideology, emotion and practice in community translation settings, focusing on how translators perceive and negotiate between their subjectivity and ethical norms.
