AUSIT VIC Presents

Understanding Police Interviewing for Interpreters

Webinar Via Zoom
  Tuesday 13 June 2023

6.00pm - 8.00pm AEST

EVENT CLOSED

This seminar will explain police interviewing techniques and describe interpreter strategies for managing the interactions effectively.

In this seminar, the presenter, Professor Georgina Heydon, will explain the most common approaches used by police to interview suspects and witnesses, and why some approaches can create difficulties for interpreters to work effectively. Participants will be introduced to the PEACE training method for police and the concepts of cognitive interviewing.  We will examine turn-taking structures in police interviews and how interpreters can manage the interaction without compromising the integrity of the evidence, or the accuracy of the rendition.

Biography - Professor Georgina Heydon

Professor Georgina Heydon is a leading expert in the language of police interviewing and has delivered training to interpreters, police and legal practitioners around the world, including the FBI and the European Police College.  Professor Heydon teaches Forensic Interviewing at RMIT University and has published extensively on police interviewing and forensic linguistics.
