REGISTRATIONS CLOSED

Join us for some strategic insights from seasoned translator Chris Durban for building and advancing a translation practice in the evolving market of 2024 and beyond!

First session (17:15-18:00): Hewing close vs kicking free

Translators don’t work in a vacuum: deadlines, document types, the customer brief, terminology and register shape virtually every job we do. In the heat of the moment, it can be tempting to play it safe. But why not take a walk on the wild side? This presentation (in English) looks closely at the constraints and choices shaping one client’s efforts to relay a key corporate message on diversity and inclusion to an international audience. The medium: a video clip packed with a complex combination of images, words and rhythms performed by Franco-Rwandan rapper Gaël Faye. We’ll analyze the translators’ process and explore how they charted a course to deliver the goods.

Second session (18:15-20:00): What/why/when/how: Building your practice in 2024 and beyond

The changing contours of today’s translation market(s) have many professional linguists gritting their teeth. Using concrete examples, this session analyzes paths forward for serious translators—and future translators—who are keen to do more than tread water.

On the docket: market segmentation, specialisation and delivering the goods, regardless of your language combination(s). But we'll also look carefully at pricing and connecting with good clients, with actionable inputs. Presentation followed by Q&A.

Biography - Chris Durban
Chris Durban grew up in northern New York State, and studied modern languages for a year in Montreal before moving to France where she shifted to languages and business studies at the Université de Paris.

After several years as an in-house Fr to En translator at a Paris bank, she went freelance.

Four decades on, her client base includes large corporations and SMEs in France and other countries, with a focus on high-profile, high-visibility and high-risk situations in business strategy, investor relations and financial communications.

Chris was awarded SFT’s Caravelle Florence-Herbulot in 2020, ITI’s John Sykes Memorial Prize in 2018, and ATA’s Gode medal in 2001, for contributions to the profession. She is co-founder and co-organizer of both SFT’s Université d’été de la traduction financière (UETF) and of “Translate in…” training events focusing on writing skills for translators.
