Join us for a dynamic workshop designed for court and tribunal interpreters who want to improve their assertiveness and practical skills to ensure effective interpreting services.
Court interpreting is a highly demanding and challenging profession, requiring not only linguistic skills but also strong cognitive abilities and emotional resilience. However, unrealistic expectations about the role of the interpreter and the task of interpreting often result in insufficient information being provided in advance to allow the interpreter to prepare adequately, or in a lack of relevant tools to facilitate effective communication. Assertiveness and strategies to secure the necessary information are therefore a must.
In this session, we will provide an overview of the preparatory information requirements before a court or tribunal interpreting assignment. We will then look at different scenarios and challenges that commonly arise. Participants will have the opportunity to role-play and discuss possible approaches to each scenario. Then, strategies for dealing with the particular challenge will be presented. The focus will be on mastering the art of seeking out the critical information and tools needed for effective interpretation from the various stakeholders, with reference to the guidelines and ethical principles that underpin the professional practice of court interpreters
Scenarios will include a variety of court and tribunal settings for on-site, video and telephone interpreting assignments.
Whether you're new to court interpreting or would like to refine your approach, this workshop will provide you with the essential tools to meet challenges with confidence and assertiveness, and to optimise your interpreting practice.
Participants are encouraged to submit scenarios that present a challenge in terms of securing preparatory information and materials, other interpreting tools and working conditions, to cintial@bigpond.net.au by 20 August.
