Join us for this in-person workshop held in conjunction with TASCAT. The day's training will be broken into two sessions:
SESSION #1: 9.00 - 11.00 AM
TITLE: Working with Interpreters at the Tasmanian Civil & Administrative Tribunal (TASCAT) : Problems + Solutions
Legal professionals frequently work alongside parties with limited English proficiency during proceedings. When collaborating with court interpreters, these professionals form an essential partnership that safeguards equal access to justice for all community members, regardless of language background or communication barriers. This professional development session will explore the nuanced challenges that commonly emerge when working with interpreters at the Tasmanian Civil & Administrative Tribunal (TASCAT). You will learn about some evidence-based strategies and practical solutions developed from real-world experiences that can address these challenges, thereby enhancing procedural fairness for all.
SESSION #2: 12:00 - 2:00 PM
TITLE: Interpreting at the Tasmanian Civil & Administrative Tribunal (TASCAT) : ethical challenges & how to overcome them
Interpreters working in the Tasmanian Civil & Administrative Tribunal (TASCAT) frequently encounter ethical dilemmas when supporting parties with limited English proficiency. This professional development session will explore these challenges in depth and provide practical strategies for addressing them effectively. You will gain insights into maintaining impartiality while ensuring accurate communication, managing confidentiality concerns, and establishing appropriate professional boundaries — all critical skills for interpreters working within Tasmania's justice system. Additionally, the session will discuss how interpreters can advocate for clear communication processes without overstepping their role, ultimately enhancing access to justice for all participants.
Light refreshments will be provided to participants. Please make your own arrangements for lunch.
