Police interpreting and translating can be regarded as a sub-field of legal interpreting and translating. Although the ethical considerations in the police setting are largely in line with those in the broader field of legal interpreting and translating, careful attention is needed when working in this specialised field.

The legal PD event presented by Dr Miranda Lai will address the following topics:

  • How interpreting works;
  • How to achieve best possible communication through language mediation;
  • Understanding police powers;
  • Characteristics of police interviews and language;
  • Linguistic and Non-linguistic challenges in police settings;
  • How interpreting works in the legal context;
  • How to achieve the best possible communication through language mediation.

This hybrid event can be attended either in person at the Law Society of Tasmania, 28 Murray Street, Hobart CBD, or online via Zoom. Please choose an in-person or online ticket when registering.
