Introduction to Medical Interpreting

Health is a huge and complex area: the more layers you unpeel, the more are revealed underneath” (Crezee, 2013, p.7). To interpret accurately and effectively in health settings, interpreters need a good understanding of anatomy & physiology, common diseases, assessments & treatment methods and sound knowledge of medical terminology. In addition, as healthcare interpreters navigate challenging situations, they need to have higher-order interpersonal and ethical decision-making skills. Working in settings such as end-of-life care can be not only cognitively but also emotionally challenging. Therefore, interpreters need to be able to recognise signs of stress, to seek help when required and practice self-care regularly.

This webinar is designed to assist interpreters in developing knowledge and skills to interpret ethically and effectively in medical assignments. We will present an overview of medical settings, including specialist healthcare areas, and explore the interpreter’s role in facilitating patient-centered communication. We will also discuss the environmental, interpersonal, intrapersonal and paralinguistic demands inherent in medical interpreting.  Participants will develop best practice strategies to prepare for assignments, to interpret accurately and impartially during medical consultations and to follow up appropriately. Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to:

  • outline generalist and specialist medical settings where healthcare interpreters work
  • describe the interpreting challenges and the competencies required to interpret accurately and effectively across health settings
  • explain the healthcare interpreter’s role in facilitating patient – centered care
  • apply best practice strategies before, during and after medical consultations.
