Book translation is often seen as a niche or hard-to-access area of practice, yet many translators already have the skills needed to work successfully with publishers. In this session, French to English translator and cookbook specialist Nicola Thayil shares real-world insights into translating books (with a focus on non-fiction).
Drawing on her experience working directly with Australian publishers, Nicola will explore how book translation differs from agency and community work, and what publishers actually expect from translators. Topics include building relationships with publishers, working with style guides, contracts and payment structures, managing long-term projects with staggered delivery, and handling complex file formats and layouts.
The session will also cover practical strategies for finding work, developing the technical and research skills required for book projects, and using AI thoughtfully as a professional tool for research and drafting. Participants will be invited to reflect on how their existing expertise could translate into book-length projects.
This session is ideal for translators who are curious about book translation, looking to diversify their practice, or wanting a clearer understanding of the realities of working with publishers.
