Community interpreters enable communication across a wide variety of settings between people who do not speak the same language. Interpreters relay the primary participants’ respective utterances, and they coordinate the flow of talk between them (Wadensjö, 1998). They regularly manage the interaction during onsite and remote assignments to maintain accuracy and the optimum flow of the communication. For example, they explain their role to clients, set up communication rules, ask participants to pause, slow down or speak one at a time, respond to asides, request clarification or repetition, manage interruptions and misunderstandings.
This webinar aims to equip interpreters with knowledge and skills for managing interaction effectively and appropriately across community settings. We will cover the following topics:
- Understanding interaction management
- Settings and situations when interventions are required
- Strategies for managing interaction in onsite and remote assignments with individual clients as well as groups
- Interaction management dos and don’ts
