Interpreting is a highly demanding cognitive process that involves a series of competing tasks such as comprehension, memory retention and language reformulation. A common challenge interpreters face with note-taking is that the more effort we spend on writing notes, the more difficult it becomes to accurately recall and deliver information, usually because less attention is afforded to listening/comprehension and language reformulation. Therefore, balancing the effort devoted to each competing task is crucial for interpreting success, especially when the source speech is long and/or complex.
Note-taking, when conducted effectively, can serve as a bridge linking source text decoding and target text delivery, thereby forming an integral part of comprehension and language reformulation. How to combine memory and note-taking skills to optimise memory retention? How to use symbols to represent and connect ideas? How to structure notes to facilitate delivery? This workshop aims to answer these questions and help participants develop an effective and meaning-based note-taking practice.
