AUSIT NAT Presents: Interactional Management in Practice: A Scenario-Based Workshop for Interpreters (Webinar)

Join us for a practical, interactive discussion of interpersonal and situational challenges interpreters may face, using real-life scenarios to explore effective interactional management and ethical practice.

Interpreters regularly encounter complex interpersonal dynamics and challenging situations that require more than linguistic competence. Effectively managing these interactions calls for strong professional judgement, practical communication strategies and a clear understanding of ethical responsibilities.

This practical workshop will explore real-life scenarios submitted by interpreters, consumers of interpreting services and agencies engaging freelance interpreters. Participants will discuss selected scenarios in small breakout groups before returning to the main room for a guided discussion of possible responses, the professional reasoning behind them, and what good ethical practice may look like in context.

The workshop will focus on the interpreter’s actions and the interactional management skills demonstrated in each scenario. Where relevant, discussions will be linked to the AUSIT Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct in identifying optimal ethical practice.

Participants are invited to submit an interactional dilemma or challenging situation they have experienced in their professional practice. Selected submissions may be discussed during the workshop. Please submit your scenario here by Friday, 14 August.

Our Presenter - Dr Jim Hlavac

Dr Jim Hlavac is an adjunct senior research fellow at Monash University. He is a practising NAATI-certified translator and interpreter. He has 12 years’ experience as a translator and interpreter instructor at post-graduate level and has led PD training for translators and interpreters across a variety of fields and topics.

Intermediate PD. Please  consult the new NAATI Recertification Catalogue to allocate the relevant PD Points. As the workshop includes a substantial focus on ethical principles and their application in professional practice, participants may claim PD points under the Ethics category. 

Certificates and recordings
PD Certificates with a link to the recording, will be shared with registrants after the event. It may take 1 to 2 weeks to be sent out.
