Have you heard about the fee scale guide that AUSIT released last year?

Designed specifically for translators and published on 29 October 2025, the AUSIT Fee Scale, Costs and Pricing – Translator Guide is a two page document that is designed to provide new and inexperienced translators with information to assist with setting their prices for services as self-employed professionals. Old and experienced translators may find it useful too! AUSIT does not recommend, authorise or endorse the prices set out in the guide. It is for information purposes only.

This relatively new translator guide explores some of the elements that could go into setting your own fees as sole traders. Based on some generic model assumptions, it sets out the cost components and aggregated historical pricing data a translator can draw on when calculating their own rates, benchmarked against an average graduate salary in Australia. This presentation will explore the process AUSIT went through in creating this Fee Scale, Costs and Pricing Guide.

Important reminder: Members must independently set their own prices for goods and services. AUSIT recommends that you calculate your own costs when determining the final price that you charge for your services, including appropriate margins for profit and overheads. Please note that if you agree upon prices with other members/translators you may be committing a serious criminal offence and may be in breach of the Competition and Consumer Act. The information in the AUSIT document is intended as a guide only.

In this webinar we will:

• Discuss the basics of anti-competitive behaviour under the Australian Competition and Consumer Act: What can we lawfully discuss about pricing, and what must stay off the table? Can AUSIT recommend fees to be charged by members? (no) What does the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) have to say about it?
• Explore the background to how this document was created: From legal advice to examples from overseas. Whose idea was it and how did it evolve?
• Compare AUSIT’s fee scale guide with similar documents from other countries and industries.
• Understand some of the generic assumptions built into these fee scales, and learn how to customise the cost assumptions for your own situation.
• Why isn’t there an interpreter guide?

Our Presenter - Jacqueline Skewes

Jacqueline Skewes is a full-time translator with 13 years of experience running her own translation business, TradTrans (https://tradtrans.com.au). Jacqueline is a member of the AUSIT Ethics and Professional Practice Committee and was one of the many AUSIT volunteers who spent hours providing input and preparing this translator guide, in order to help translators think when setting prices. As a former accountant, she has an active interest in the practical side of running a translation business.
