Family violence interpreting is one of the most demanding areas of professional practice, yet interpreters may have limited access to specialised preparation and support. This workshop provides a practical introduction to Victoria’s family violence system and the interpreter’s role within it.

The workshop covers five key areas:

  • Victorian family violence legislation, terminology and relevant legislative developments
  • Key agencies and services, including Victoria Police, courts, The Orange Door and specialist family violence services
  • The Multi-Agency Risk Assessment and Management (MARAM) Framework and its role in family violence practice
  • Realistic ethical scenarios considered through the principles of the AUSIT Code of Ethics
  • Practical safety protocols and evidence-informed strategies

Our Presenter - Bijan Asgari

Bijan is a social worker, family violence specialist and Men’s Behaviour Change Program facilitator who speaks Dari and Farsi. He is also a former NAATI-accredited interpreter and Child Protection practitioner.

Through Vanguard Consulting & Training, Bijan developed this workshop to bridge the gap between interpreting practice and specialist family violence practice. As one of the few professionals in Australia with expertise in both fields, he contributes this combined perspective to some of the sector’s most complex cases—supporting practitioners, their teams and the clients at the centre of their work.

Bijan works across Victoria’s health and community services system in both clinical and community-based roles.
