  AUSIT National Presents:

National Community
Translation Protocols

17 February 2023
4.00pm  - 6.00pm AEDT

EVENT CLOSED

Australia is a multicultural and multilingual nation. Over 300 languages are spoken in the community, including Auslan (Australian Sign Language) and Indigenous languages. The Covid-19 global pandemic highlighted the complexities of disseminating multilingual messages for culturally and linguistically diverse populations. During the early stages of the pandemic, the quality of translations, as well as the efficiency and timing of message delivery were scrutinised by the media and the public.

Community translation gained visibility in the agendas of the Federal and State Governments and became a vital ingredient in the communication strategy of health messaging to the Australian population. The Federal Department of Health established the Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Communities Covid-19 Health Advisory Group with the aim of co-ordinating an evidence-based response to the pandemic. AUSIT, as the peak national professional organisation in the translating & interpreting industry, has been an active member of this Group.

As a result of our participation in the Advisory Group, AUSIT partnered with the Federation of Ethnic Communities of Australia (FECCA) and the Australian Government’s Department of Health to develop a Quality Assurance Framework for Community Translation. This led to AUSIT drafting National Protocols for Community Translation that set out guidelines for good practice. These guidelines will be pivotal in future health and environmental crisis.

In this event we will launch the Protocols and we will host a Q&A panel with 3 key stakeholders: AUSIT, the Department of Health & Aging and FECCA.
